The Philippines, an archipelago highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, faces numerous environmental challenges that profoundly affect the lives and livelihoods of its people. The predominant reasons for these sudden or progressive changes in the environment can be attributed to a combination of global climate trends and specific local vulnerabilities. These changes manifest as more frequent and intense typhoons, rising sea levels, and altered rainfall patterns, all of which disrupt traditional ways of life and threaten national stability.

As global sea surface temperatures rise, storms draw more energy, leading to stronger winds and heavier rainfall. The Philippines, situated in the Western Pacific, is a global hotspot for typhoons, and these events have grown progressively more destructive. For many Filipinos, particularly those in coastal communities and low-lying areas, a single typhoon can wipe out homes, destroy crops, and displace entire families, reversing years of development and economic progress. The devastating impact of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013 serves as a stark reminder of this vulnerability, highlighting the immediate and catastrophic effects of a rapidly changing climate.
Beyond sudden disasters, progressive environmental changes also adversely affect the population. One significant factor is sea-level rise, which threatens coastal communities and low-lying islands. As polar ice melts and ocean water expands from warming, coastlines recede, and saltwater intrusion contaminates freshwater sources. This progressive change jeopardizes the drinking water supply and makes agricultural land infertile, forcing people to abandon their homes and farms.
